Tell us a little about yourself
My name is Jason Kochis and I am a freelance artist living in Atlanta, Georgia.
I have exhibited my artwork at The Smithsonian Museum of Design in Atlanta, CBGB’s 313 Gallery in New York City, Missing Link Toys in Portland, Cry Baby Art Gallery in New Jersey, The Alcove Gallery and Foundation One Gallery in Atlanta.
I have been published in The Art of Modern Rock book, Tres Logos book, The Graphic Designer and Illustrators Market, Clutter Magazine, the SideShow Magazine, and Roctober Magazine.
How and when did you get into designer toys?
It was about 2 years or so ago. I was curious about making toys out of some characters I created. After contacted a toy manufacturer, I was overwhelmed at the cost of producing my own vinyl toy. I soon discovered Munny and felt it offered me a more affordable way to bring my characters to life. And I have been hooked ever since.
What are your favorite toys and/or artists?
My favorite toys are Munny, Dunny, Trexi, Circuspunks, and Qees. My favorite artists are Bil BetsOvic, Joe Ledbetter, Jeremyville, CoolVadar, Jim Koch, Bob Horner, Lou Pimentel, and Doktor A.
Tell us a little about your collection
Mostly, just a few production toys of my own work right now. My Swallow Peace Trexi from the Coca-Cola “A Better Tomorrow” Series and a set of Planet of the Apes CircusPunks released earlier this year. There is so much stuff I want to get but I do not have the funds for.
When did you start customizing?
I started customizing about 2 years ago. I started with a Munny and then did a few Swearbears for a show at CBGB’s.
What are your favorite toys for customizing?
My favorite toys to customize are Munny, Dunny, Circuspunks, Qees, Moody, and Swearbears.
What materials and techniques do you use?
I use primarily acrylic paints. I tend to make sketches before starting on a new piece.
How much time do you spend customizing a toy?
It really depends on the size and complexity but at least 4 - 6 hours.
Do you make other art besides customizing toys?
Yes, I do paintings in acrylic on wood panels, canvas, skateboards, cardboard, etc. I also work as a freelance graphic designer and web designer.
What other interests do you have (besides designer toys)?
I like listening to and playing music and spending time with my family.
Do you take on commissions?
Yes, of course. Just send me an email if you are interested.
